A debt of gratitude in the Philippines is called Utang na loob. The payment can be giving special favors to the other person regardless of the moral outcome. Two individuals may form a bond based on utang na loob. it is expected that one will attempt repayment for the debt. When one has obligation to repay a parent it can never be fully re-paid, with this the repayment can last for generations. Some things that fall under the utang na loob would be: saving someones life, providing employment or even making it possible for someone to get an education. Doing these thing initaite a long-term interdependancy. This is where the grantor can expect help or a favor from the debtor whenever the need arises with the this the debtor can ask for other favors. In the Philipines they are true to their word at paying someone back.
I feel this can relate to the iceberg metaphor for with how the Philippines are on this belief it would fall into the Deep-Level Culture. For this is what they believe.
